May is characterized by fast action and great variety!  While coho and steelhead dominate most catches, offshore trips will also produce fair numbers of kings and lake trout.
June fishing produces a nice mixed bag of coho, steelhead and lake trout.  June features some of the best weather of the year making it a fine month to be in the water.  Toward the end of June, large Kings begin  moving into the region.
July and August are two of the most exciting months to go fishing on Lake Michigan!  BIG FISH and lots of action typify summer fishing trips on the Blue Horizon.  During this period, it is not uncommon to return to the dock with four or five different species of fish.  July action will usually be dominated by larger Coho, Kings and Lake Trout.  August is definitely a premier month to catch trophy Kings, Steelhead, and Brown Trout.  During August, mature Salmon and Trout begin staging offshore in preparation for their Fall spawning migrations.  These fish are hungry and can be found in large schools!

September is a month of changes.  The first two weeks of the month find us pursuing Kings, Steelhead, and Lake Trout in offshore waters.  If conditions set up, we will also have a near-shore fishery for spawning bound Kings and Browns along the shoreline.  Fishing during the last half of September is weather sensitive.  Action can be very good or slow... depending on the winds.
October is another month where fishing is highly weather sensitive.  If winds are not too strong, good to excellent action for immature Kings (5-15 pounds) can be expected.  Excellent Lake Trout fishing over deepwater reefs is available during the last three weeks of the month.  Limit catches of big Lake Trout can be expected!  Weather is critical to success during October.

When is the best time to go fishing on Lake Michigan?

The answer to this question depends on what type of fish you want to catch and if you are hoping to catch BIG fish.  Yes, just about anytime is a good time to go fishing, however, the Winthrop Harbor region geatures very distinct seasons of fishing periods.
While we catch lots of fish all season long (Captain Dan's career average is 17 fish per charter), each month features differences between species availability, numbers and sizes of fish caught.  The following is aguide describing the action during a typical season off Winthrop Harbor.
